    Contact and voter processes on the infinite percolation cluster as models of host-symbiont interactions

    We introduce spatially explicit stochastic processes to model multispecies host-symbiont interactions. The host environment is static, modeled by the infinite percolation cluster of site percolation. Symbionts evolve on the infinite cluster through contact or voter type interactions, where each host may be infected by a colony of symbionts. In the presence of a single symbiont species, the condition for invasion as a function of the density of the habitat of hosts and the maximal size of the colonies is investigated in details.     Gli indicatori forniscono una rappresentazione dei fenomeni di desertificazione utile a prevenirne e/o a mitigarne gli effetti negativi; la rappresentazione deve risultare completa ed articolata e comprendere i rapporti causa-effetto che caratterizzano i singoli processi, così da ottenere un’immagine complessiva della situazione e dei possibili livelli di intervento. L’obiettivo di questo lavoro è quello di sintetizzare, senza pretesa di esaustività, le attuali conoscenze in tema di indicatori e di proporre uno schema concettuale integrato, come possibile alternativa rispetto ai sistemi esistenti. Lo studio è stato articolato in tre parti: inquadramento e implicazioni delle problematiche di desertificazione nella sponda Nord del bacino del Mediterraneo; rassegna e analisi di indicatori di desertificazione già sviluppati e/o proposti in Italia e all’estero; contributo all’organizzazione dei sistemi di indicatori. Sulla base delle conoscenze contenute nelle prime due parti del lavoro, è stato proposto un nuovo schema di sistematizzazione, nel quale sono stati inquadrati gli indicatori riferiti alle aree pilota del progetto RIADE

    Construction Stage Analysis for a New Mixed Structure Building in Milan

    In this study the Construction Stage Analysis (CSA) of a new mixed structure building is discussed in order to identify the best timing and execution activities scheduling. The building is part of a new university campus that will be realized close to the center of the city. The CSA is carried out by the implementation of two models: the finite element model for the structural analyses and the BIM model for controlling the sequence of the construction phases. Once fixed the structural model, in the preliminary design phase, different sequences are analyzed in order to optimize the construction management in terms of timing and costs. Moreover, the optimization of the construction phases is set by considering the creep and shrinkage of the concrete material

    Climbing fiber regulation of spontaneous Purkinje cell activity and cerebellum-dependent blink responses

    It has been known for a long time that GABAergic Purkinje cells in the cerebellar cortex, as well as their target neurons in the cerebellar nuclei, are spontaneously active. The cerebellar output will, therefore, depend on how input is integrated into this spontaneous activity. It has been shown that input from climbing fibers originating in the inferior olive controls the spontaneous activity in Purkinje cells. While blocking climbing fiber input to the Purkinje cells causes a dramatic increase in the firing rate, increased climbing fiber activity results in reduced Purkinje cell activity. However, the exact calibration of this regulation has not been examined systematically. Here we examine the relation between climbing fiber stimulation frequency and Purkinje cell activity in unanesthetized decerebrated ferrets. The results revealed a gradual suppression of Purkinje cell activity, starting at climbing fiber stimulation frequencies as low as 0.5 Hz. At 4 Hz, Purkinje cells were completely silenced. This effect lasted an average of 2 min after the stimulation rate was reduced to a lower level. We also examined the effect of sustained climbing fiber stimulation on overt behavior. Specifically, we analyzed conditioned blink responses, which are known to be dependent on the cerebellum, while stimulating the climbing fibers at different frequencies. In accordance with the neurophysiological data, the conditioned blink responses were suppressed at stimulation frequencies of =4 Hz

    Abstract The suspension system of external stores of a military aircraft has reached the fatigue life limit estimated during the design phase, however, some elements suggest that the duration of the structure has been largely underestimated. This work aims to re-evaluate the fatigue life of the system and the potential extension of its use following an experimental numerical approach where, starting from a series of experimental flights in which the structure was instrumented, the forces acting on the system were calculated. Therefore, a methodology was developed to limit the damage calculation time using a hybrid approach that exploits the advantages deriving from the low computational burden typical of the methods in the frequency domain coupled with the Rainflow Counting precision. The study, although penalized by a series of conservative hypotheses, allowed to estimate a residual life equal to past life. It also provided important feedback on the field of application of advanced techniques for estimating the fatigue life of aeronautical structures subjected to random loading stories

    Nonlinear dynamic analysis of gas turbine combustor leaf seal

    The leaf seals are one of the typical sealing systems in gas turbine and jet engines. In Baker Hughes LT family gas turbines, they are used to create sealing between the combustion chamber and the first stage nozzle. The leaf seals are thin metallic plates and subjected to dynamic loads and high temperatures. They have curved contacts, and depending on the inclination, they can experience partial contact. Furthermore, when excited by dynamic loads, the leaf seal can be subject to intermittent contact, possibly triggering wear out or vibratory phenomena. Due to its flexibility and its partial seating, it exhibits a complex nonlinear dynamic behaviour, strongly variable with the operating conditions. This study presents a numerical investigation using coupled static/dynamic harmonic balance method (HBM) frequency-based solution technique.     Dipole anisotropies of IRAS galaxies and the contribution of a large-scale local void

    Recent observations of dipole anisotropies show that the velocity of the Local Group (\Vec v_{\rm G}) induced by the clustering of IRAS galax ies has an amplitude and direction similar to those of the velocity of Cosmic Microwave Background dipole anisotropy (\Vec v_{\rm CMB}), but the difference | \Vec v_{\rm G} - \Vec v_{\rm CMB} | is still ∼170\sim 170 km/s, which is about 28% of |\Vec v_{\rm CMB} |. Here we consider the possibility that the origin of this difference comes from a hypothetical large-scale local void, with which we can account for the accelerating behavior of type Ia supernovae due to the spatial inhomogeneity of the Hubble constant without dark energies and derive the constraint to the model parameters of the local void. It is found as a result that the distance between the Local Group and the center of the void must be (10−−20)h−1(10 -- 20) h^{-1} Mpc, whose accurate value depends on the background model parameters.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, to be published in ApJ 584, No.2 (2003
